Abstract
Investigations into the origins, or the conditions of a start are invariably exciting tasks for the historian. Apart from hopes to realize positivistic ideals of gaining established knowledge there is the intellectual pleasure of observing and scientifically revealing the germs out of which a brilliant artistic career could have evolved; to trace back and find a multitude of marks left by the genesis of virtues, means, and ideas later enumerated as determinants of an oeuvre. All this can be perceived only in our late endeavour, equipped by the knowledge of a whole, as in early moments routes leading to diverse directions had been equally open and calling. The task of investigation is to discover and document a series of choices, the process of following and completing a course; to draw a picture of a number of posibilities gradually reduced by subsequent decisions.
