Naval Engineers JournalVolume 87, Issue 3 p. 27-31 BANQUET ADDRESS: “DESIGN FOR CONTINUITY” JOHN T. GILBRIDE, JOHN T. GILBRIDE Mr. John T. Gilbride: , born 29 May 1916 in Brooklyn, N.Y., graduated from the University of Pennsylvania after which he became associated full time at the Todd Shipyards Corporation Brooklyn Division in various capacities. In 1941 he was appointed Assistant Superintendent of Naval Ship Conversions, following which he was successively the Ship-Repair Supervisor, the Superintendent in Charge of Naval Repairs, and finally the General Superintendent of Todd's Brooklyn Shipyard until 1946 when he was sent to the Los Angeles Division as Assistant General Manager: Later that year he became the General Manager of the Division, a post he held for twelve years. Made a Director in 1951, Mr. Gilbride has been President of Todd Shipyards Corporation since 1958. Additionally, he is also a member of The Board of Lester Engineering Company and Designers & Planners, Inc., both subsidiaries of the Todd Corporation. A staunch advocate of American seapower, Mr. Gilbride is active in numerous organizations, Associations and Societies, all related to the maritime industry, and in 1971 he was appointed by President Nixon to the Commission of American Shipbuilding, serving until 1973 when the Commission was terminated. Outstanding for his accomplishments in this area, he was the recipient of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers Vice Admiral “Jerry Land” Medal for 1966 and the American Legion Robert L. Hague Post Distinguished Service Medal for 1974 with citations for his service to the American maritime industry and the Merchant Marine. Mr. Gilbride is a member of the Board of Trustees of Webb Institute of Naval Architecture, and in addition to ASNE, to name but a few of the many professional organizations and societies to which he contributes much time and energy, he is a member of the Shipbuilders Council of America, the Navy League of the United States, the American Shipping Society, National Defense Transportation Association, the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, the American Welding Society, and the Advisory Board of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.Search for more papers by this author JOHN T.
