Abstract

Through rapid economic development in Pacific Asia, the interdependence of cities is becoming more important. This research focuses on the functional diversification of cities and the linkages between them at an international level within this region. A network of international bank offices is investigated, and 38 major cities which are connected by this network are identified. This group is then classified into nine categories according to their functional types and degrees of connectivity. The patterns of linkages among the cities are then analysed, and finally, a model of an international system of banking centres in Pacific Asia is presented.
