Abstract

This paper deals with the steady hydrodynamic problem of a single-rudder ship moving parallel to a vertical wall in shallow water. The ship-rudder system is considered as a wing with a flap. The main result of this theoretical study is that the sway force and yaw moment due to the presence of the wall ( bank suction ) can be cancelled by giving the rudder a suitable deflection towards the wall, at virtually zero yaw angle.
