Abstract

It is shown that the result obtained from the cranking model suffers from a large inaccuracy in the description of nuclei, at the rotational frequency where a band crossing occurs. We develop a more reliable picture of the band crossing, which stresses the importance of examining the behaviour of excited states as well as the ground state in the cranking model.
