Abstract

After the post-war demobilisation the number of forces at the disposal of the Western powers was reduced to about 880 000 men. Corresponding reductions in the Soviet forces, however, brought them down to over 4 million men, part of them in Europe. The American monopoly in nuclear weapons has been perceived as more than matching these preponderant Soviet numbers. This monopoly has been supplemented by a monopoly in long-range bombers and by the network of military bases operated by the USA and UK around the Soviet Union.KeywordsNuclear WeaponEUROPEAN SecurityGround ForceConventional ForceSurprise AttackThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
