Abstract

In recent years, the theory of the infectious nature of deforming arthritis has gained considerable recognition. As we point out in a paper 1 shortly to be published, numerous clinical data together with the bacteriologic studies of many workers have focused attention on the prominent features of a low grade infection in this disease. On this assumption is based the widely used designation of chronic infectious and the treatment of patients with this condition is similarly affected by this point of view to a large extent. Still, the evidence in favor of the infectious etiology of arthritis is as yet fragmentary, and not conclusive. While many contributions have argued in favor of the infectious nature of arthritis, there are also considerable negative data that do not substantiate the role of infection in this disease.
