Abstract

Two preparations of maltitol (4- O-α- d-glucopyranosyl- d-sorbitol), hydrogenated glucose syrups and maltitol crystal, were examined for genotoxic potential by a battery of short-term tests. In the bacterial reversion assay, maltitol induced no detectable revertants in any of the tester strains, Salmonella typhimurium TA98, TA100, TA1535, TA1537, TA1538, or Escherichia coli WP2/pKM101 at doses of 0.5–50 mg per plate with and without rat liver S9 mix. In the micronucleus test, no significant increase in the frequency of micronucleated erythrocytes was observed in bone marrow of mice after administration of the two preparations at 3.75–30 g per kg by gastric intubation.
