Abstract

A prototype X-ray gauging system to measure the thickness and/or mass per unit area of sheet products on-line in a rolling mill is described. The system addresses the problem of composition sensitivity associated with X-ray transmission thickness gauges currently in use. Changes in the attenuation coefficient, due to variations in composition of the sheet product, are sensed directly and errors, which produce errors in the gauge reading, are corrected instantaneously with the aid of the latest digital signal processing techniques.
