Abstract

Continuing its endeavours in scientific education, the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) has just published a free brochure entitled Genetics Basics. The booklet includes descriptions of how genes work, Mendel's rules of inheritance and the ‘strange but true’ exceptions to these, a section on why basic research is important and some of the connections between genes and disease. Some of the most recent technologies are discussed in an attempt to convey the excitement of the field to an expected audience of high school and early college students and teachers. The publication is available online at http://www.nigms.nih.gov/news/science_ed/genetics.pdf or can be ordered free of charge by calling (001) 301 496 7301. HD
