The image is taken from Vogel et al. (pp. 458–469), where the authors identify AQP4(201-220) as major I-Ab restricted T-cell epitope of full length AQP4. In wild type mice, both the endogenous T-cell and the B-cell repertoires are purged of AQP4 reactive clones due to deletional tolerance. In transfer experiments, AQP4(201-220) specific T cells alone induce clinical signs of encephalomyelitis. However, only the simultaneous presence of AQP4 specific T cells and anti-AQP4 antibodies results in NMO-like lesions in the brain. The image has been digitally altered for the cover.
