Abstract

It was necessary to analyze the finite amplitude waves in exhaust systems for predicting the acoustic characteristics in silencers of internal combustion engines. In connection with the reduction of exhaust noise in automobile gasoline engines a numerical analysis was carried out on the initiation and propagation of shock waves in several silencer models. The numerical results were compared with experimental result. The behavior of shock waves and vortex rings of this analysis gave fairly good agreement with the experimental visualization results.
