Abstract

Introduction: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is related to chronic mucosal inflammation and manifestations such as bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramps, tenesmus and urgency. Main Clinical Finding: A 63-year-old male patient, known case of ulcerative colitis under regular allopathic treatment for 16 years had recurrent symptoms of blood and mucous mixed stool (2-3 times/day) with abdominal tenesmus and urgency to defecate. Diagnosis: Based on the clinical features like tenesmus, increased frequency of blood mixed mucoid defecation, and decreased volume of faeces, this case of UC was diagnosed as Raktaja Pravahika. Interventions and Outcome: The combinations of medicines based on Ayurvedic principles were intervened. Significant result was observed in signs and symptoms with Grade I UC impression within 15 months without recurrence of any signs symptoms for about 6 months. Conclusions: This treatment was found effective for this case. It could be a valuable intellectual addition to researchers and to the medical field.
