Abstract

The present analysis is conducted for the evaluation of contact pressures of axisymmetric shells made of laminated composites or functionally graded materials. This class of problems is usually called the Signorini–Fichera problem (unilateral constraints) and can be solved as the lower-bound problem. The numerical solution of this problem is proposed both for symmetric and unsymmetric shell configurations. The first-ply-failure of such structures is considered. It is demonstrated that the failure occurs at the end of the contact area corresponding to the appearance of stress concentration of radial concentrated forces.
