Abstract

Construction of caverns, underground tunnels and dams must deal with large bodies of rocks and with the mechanics of rock foundation. Such rocks, as well as geomechanical rocks, are frequently modeled as periodically assembled rigid blocks of identical size which could slide with respect to one other. The decisive role of joints and seams has long been recognized by engineers working with structures of rocks. Indeed, in the stability of rock slopes and underground excavations, the influence of the joints, rather than the rock type, is the dominant factor.KeywordsVariational InequalityContact ProblemAverage EquationRock SlopeJointed RockThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
