Abstract

The technique of perturbedγ-angular correlation has been applied to measure atomic spin precessions of nuclear excited fluorine ions on recoil through vacuum in a weak transverse magnetic field. The ions were allowed to emerge from thin iron or copper backed targets and were stopped after flight through vacuum in a Ag foil. The differing precessions observed are attributed to different average charge states of the ions on emergence from the two target backings.
