Abstract

A cross sectional descriptive study was carried out in Primary Health Centers (PHCs) in Sokoto State to assess the availability of nutritional units in primary health care facilities in the state and their capacities. The target for the study were the in-charge of the sampled PHCs and nutrition units of the PHCs. The study PHCs were selected using the cluster sampling method. Data were collected using an interviewer-administered questionnaire and observer checklist. The study shows a lack of adequate demonstration kitchens and utensils in many PHCs, inappropriate, multitasking and poorly trained personnel. It is recommended that demonstration kitchens in the PHCs be revitalized and adequate staffing and training be provided for nutrition staff across the state.
