Abstract
The authors experimentally investigate the discontinuous ("jumping") character of the development of laser cracks in polymethyl methacrylate. The discontinuities arise in such an order that the crack remains rounded, even if the laser beam is rectangular in cross section. The authors estimate the pressure drop in the crack during a "jump."
