Abstract

The advent of modern navigation techniques makes it possible to solve the problem of continuous automatic track-keeping control of a ship on a desired track. Thus the safety of navigation in congested areas may be significantly improved. One of the pioneering works in this field belongs to J. Godowski and A. Gelb /I/. The authors discussed a control loop of a ship ensuring a desired quality of the transient performance. The matter discussed in the present paper is the synthesis of the ship’s control system based upon the minimization of the mean-square estimate of the ship’s deviation from the desired track. The information required may be obtained from radionavigation receiver, gyrocompass and log.
