Abstract

Ai, W.; Zhang, H.; Zhu, P., and Chi, H., 2020. A study on safe ship navigation in curved bridge channel. In: Wan, Z. (ed.), Coordinated Sustainable Development in Coastal Areas: Environment and Economy. Journal of Coastal Research, Special Issue No. 109, pp. 121–125. Coconut Creek (Florida), ISSN 0749-0208.Accidents often occur in curved channels due to the complex currents condition. In order to reduce accidents, the present study investigated safe ship navigation in curved channels, and factors affecting ship navigations in these areas. Mathematic models and simulation were used to estimate ship passing capacity, the minimum distance between bridge pier surface and channel edge. Results showed that ship passing capacity and the minimum distance between bridge-pier surface and channel edge are two key factors for ship safety navigation in these water areas.
