Abstract
Purpose: Osteophyte (OsP) formation is an important feature of osteoarthritis (OA). Better tools to study OsP formation in detail can yield important insight into OA progression and aid in phenotyping the disease more accurately. Identifying OsPs, as well as their precursors, in pre-clinical OA models is especially important when studying early OA and disease modifying treatments using animal models. OsPs may develop prior to articular cartilage degeneration and their development can be especially rapid in experimental OA models with artificially induced OA.
