Antibodies against NMDAR or other neuronal cell surface targets are considered pathogenic in people with encephalitis, however their relevance in patients with purely psychiatric presentations has been seen as controversial and screening for antibodies, and treatment when they are detected, is not readily available. There have been mixed findings of increased prevalence of antibodies in patients with psychosis and a variety of testing methods used.
