Abstract

Red mud is the largest solid waste generated by aluminium industry. Selective dissolution of Al2O3, SiO2, Na2O, CaO in moderately heat-treated red mud by sulphuric acid-hydrofluoric acid medium has been used to enrich Fe2O3 and TiO2. The heat energy released during the exothermic reaction was used for leaching the components in red mud to achieve self-sustained autogenous dissolution at ambient condition. SiO2 was removed by hydrofluoric acid. The treated residue was used as a precursor for preparing iron based nano particles by auto combustion. The iron nano materials were characterized and the nano formation was verified by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM).
