Abstract

One emerging opportunity in autoethnographic research and advocacy includes refining the use of social media for purposes of connectedness, community, and activism. I offer considerations in understanding the vital role autoethnography can play in activism. The chapter intends to highlight the activism within and because of autoethnographic studies as inspiration for using social media. I begin with a self-reflection of autoethnography situating personal experiences, supported by authors who use these practices in activism and social justice pedagogies in higher education. The chapter continues with a review of the role of storytelling in community activism and how social media provides unprecedented reach and scope. Next, a brief introduction of the challenges and opportunities in using activist, autoethnographic techniques that incorporate social media. The chapter concludes by advocating support of social media in ethical ways that are meaningful in autoethnography and activism in higher education.
