Abstract

During the second temple period, there is a noticeable growth in hymnography and prayer literature, which is well represented among the literature discovered at Qumran. A significant number of the approximately 930 manuscripts discovered in the Qumran caves contain poetic compositions, including psalms, hymns, or other liturgical texts.' These poetic and liturgical texts fall into seven major categories: (1) liturgies for fixed prayer times, (2) ceremonial liturgies, (3) eschatological prayers, (4) magical incantations, (5) psalmic collections, (6) Hodayot hymns, and (7) prayers embedded in narratives.2 The increase in the production of prayer literature during the second temple period is part of an overall growth of interpretive literature,3
