Abstract

The primary objective of our analysis was to demonstrate that patients with simultaneous bilateral ureteral calculi (SBUC) do not all have exactly the same initial clinical presentation. Therefore, a tailored approach should be applied to their management just as in any other clinical condition. Traditionally, patients with SBUC undergo immediate upper tract drainage and deferred definitive stone treatment. As emphasized in our study and the Editorial Comment, 1 Peter L.S. Simultaneous bilateral ureteral calculi: A new paradigm for management [Editorial Comment]. Urology. Google Scholar this staged approach remains the standard of care in patients with SBUC who present with true emergencies including infection, significant renal injury, or electrolyte abnormalities. However, this represents less than a third of patients with SBUC in our series.
