Abstract

We appreciate the thoughtful commentary by Dr. Johnsen. We agree that partner presence at a preoperative appointment is not a perfect proxy for social support, but we also believe partner presence communicates a fundamental commitment to the patient-partner relationship. A patient’s willingness to discuss his erectile dysfunction in front of his partner, despite the feelings of shame, guilt, or frustration that may accompany this diagnosis, indicates a degree of openness and trust in the relationship. Similarly, a partner’s willingness to attend the visit suggests recognition of the problem and an interest in the outcome of the intervention.
