Abstract

Abstract In the past three years, there have been long-term discussions on the possible creation of a centre of excellence in Central Europe, dedicated to basic and applied research in pGysics, biology, medicine and modern technologies using nuclear techniques. This activity started immediately after the removal of the iron curtain Austrian physicists, who proposed the construction of a tau-charm factory accompanied by a synchrotron source AUSTRON). A commission under the patronage of the Austrian Academy of Sciences was formed in June 1990 (chairman Prof. P. Skrflicky, TU Vienna) to prepare the proposal and to coordinate the activity in the field. At an EPS Nuclear Physics Conference held in October 1990 in Bratislava, a neutron spallation source was proposed as an alternative. At the workshop organized by the University of Bratislava (April 1991), countries of the Pentagonale (later Hexagonale) joined the proposal that was later modified at many subsequent workshops held in Vienna, Trieste, CERN, Bratislava and Budapest. This activity was officially supported by the countries of the Central European Initiative (Working Group on Science and Technology) that formally accepted the proposal.
