Abstract

Abstract : In this paper some experiences about the application of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) in water related management along the Austrian Danube are marized. The issues refer to the environmental assessment of hydrologi- cal changes in a flood plain region, to groundwater management in a densely populated residential area and to regional water management and decision making in an agricultural area. These case studies have several common features : — regions, hydrologically dominated by the river Danube, — the main water resource is a groundwater system, which has to be managed properly, — use of GIS in environmentally related water management, — coupling of GIS and hydrological models, — development of a methodology to assist in water related decision making. The benefits of a GIS approach are discussed and some deficits in available GIS tools are summarized.
