Abstract

This chapter presents an overview of the advances in the application of geographic information system (GIS) software and modeling for the study of the coastal environment. The role of geographical data and information is considered for the study of the coastal environment, and the significant benefits obtained from integrating GIS and coastal modeling tools. The rapid developments in computer technology are used as the basis for understanding the factors driving the development of, and requirement for, more powerful GIS-based coastal modeling tools. With the rapid growth in desktop processing power, developments in user-interfaces, and the Internet is of great demand for operational applications of GIS and modeling for monitoring, management, planning, and decision-making.
