Abstract

In the changed global strategic environment. Australian defence planners face complex challenges at time of rapid and far reaching changes in the Asia Pacific Region. Whilst not facing a specific identifiable threat it is essential to develop close defence and security ties with Asian neighbours to create a shared sense of security while at the same time maintaining traditional links with the West and in particular Britain. Here Australia's Defence Minister discusses the context of Defence planning stressing how growing economic links with Asia have increased Australia's stake in Asian security While not traditional consulting closely on security matters, asian countries are now increasingly coming together to build a dialogue on issues such as the Korean – Peninsula and relations with China With the restrucring of the Australian defence forces based on qualitative improvements in technology, personnel and equipment, Australia with its coalition partners will not only be in a position to fortify its own defence but to substantially contribute to the longterm security of the region as a whole.
