Abstract
To many students of sociology, Comte is known primarily as the creator of sociology, the first of the great thinkers who endeavored to extricate sociology from social philosophy and to assign it a province of its own. By many he is remembered only for his hierarchy of the sciences: mathematics, astronomy, physics, chemistry, biology, and sociology, the regina scientarum; or for his theory of social evolution wherein he outlines the three stages through which all advanced societies have passed: the theological, metaphysical and positive (or scientific).
