Abstract

AUGMENTATION of the ovary stimulating effect of anterior pituitary gland extracts by the addition of non-specific substances has been frequently noted. Among the substances found to have such an effect are tannic acid (Fevold, Hisaw, Hellbaum and Hertz, 1933), zinc sulphate (Maxwell, 1934; Saunders and Cole, 1936), the formed elements of cattle blood (Casida, 1936), casein and egg albumin (Saunders and Cole, 1936), and extracts of milk, egg, liver, thyroid, and lemon (Hellbaum, 1936). On the other hand, no such effect of non-specific substances on the gonadotropic extract from castrate urine has been demonstrable. The results reported below may explain this fact. In the course of experiments with the gonadotropic substance excreted by ovariectomized women, the untreated urine was thoroughly dialyzed against water, using a cellophane “suasage casing” membrane. Assays of the urine before and after dialysis showed a considerable loss of potency to have occurred during this process.
