Abstract

This study examined the degree to which atmosphere, sounds or volume levels impact nursing home residents with dementia and employees. Research questions were how an auditory milieu is designed, how it can be positively redesigned and how this affects the employees and residents’ well-being. A pre/post mixed-methods design using the following methods was carried out: descriptions of atmosphere, measurements of volume level and reverberation time, record of sounds, questionnaire for employees and observation of the residents with dementia (Dementia Care Mapping). Between two research phases, further training for employees, technical changes and sound insulation took place. In the first research phase high volume levels and high reverberation times were measured and many technical sounds recorded. The auditory environment could be redesigned most effectively through the combination of further training, technical changes and sound insulation measures, as found in a second data collection.
