Abstract

The work system in a garment manufacturing unit can be analyzed from physical, physiological, cognitive, organizational and environmental ergonomics perspectives. This work is centered on auditing the physical environmental parameters from ergonomics perspective. The environmental parameters including Illumination, Temperature and Noise levels were measured in Cutting, Sewing, Finishing, Ironing, Inspection and Packing sections of the selected garment manufacturing unit in Bengaluru. The observations indicated that certain measured parameters were beyond the prescribed limits in various sections of the garment manufacturing unit. The inference made from the observations and interactions revealed that the prevailing indoor physical work environment in the unit has an adverse influence on the well-being of the workers. Based on the observations and analysis, the authors proposed interventions from ergonomics perspective. These interventions are expected to improve the physical environment in the garment manufacturing unit.KeywordsGarment manufacturing unitEnvironmental parametersErgonomic interventionsAuditAnd indoor
