Abstract

Purpose: To report the atypical presentations of visceral leishmaniasis in endemic areas. Materials and Methods: In this retrospective study we constructed a case series, of 9 patients presenting with atypical clinical features of visceral leishmaniasis in Bihar state of India; an endemic zone for this disease. Additionally, we have reviewed the literature of atypical presentations of this disease in brief. Results: Two patients presented with portal hypertension. Five patients had no evidence of splenomegaly of which one case was associated with eventeration of diaphragm on ultrasonography. One patient presented with gastrointestinal symptom in which endoscopic biopsy detected Leishman Donovan bodies on histopathological examination. A case of infant (5 months age) with visceral leishmaniasis has been also included in this case series. All the cases responded and were cured with intravenous liposomal amphotericin B treatment. Conclusion: Diagnosing visceral leishmaniasis can be difficult due to some atypical presentations. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment leads to cure of the condition.
