Abstract

The attenuated total reflection (ATR) technique has been used to follow the reaction of films of Ag with films of KCl in air at room temperature. An intermediate mixed layer develops between salt and metal as metal diffuses into salt. Apparent growth rates are as low as 0.2 nm/h. The experimental results indicate that water plays a crucial role in such a reaction. The ATR technique is shown to be very sensitive to processes taking place at the interface.
