Abstract
In situ atomic force microscopy has been conducted of the buckling of vacuum deposited thin 304 stainless steel films on polycarbonate substrates. The first stage of this deformation process has been observed and is related to a critical applied compressive stress of approximately 2 GPa. The debonding propagation occurs with the increased compressive stress in a direction perpendicular to the additional uni-axial stress.
