Abstract

One of the unsolved problems in Physics is the many-body problem, which is of great importance to several branches of Science. Studying collisions between fundamental charged projectiles and simple atoms allows us to investigate the dynamic many-body problem under very well defined conditions. If, for example we regard the ionization of a hydrogen atom by impact of an antiproton, we start with a bound system which is accurately described, and end with three particles in the continuum, while the acting forces and the structure of the particles are precisely known. Another example is the double ionization of helium by fast proton impact, where the motion of the two heavy particles can be calculated with high precision, so that the effects of the interaction between the two light particles can be studied.
