Abstract
Electrons captured by positive ions from neutral atoms preferentially populate excited states, which can be detected by the subsequent radiation. This circumstance can be used in plasma diagnostics to measure the concentration of impurity ions, provided the charge exchange cross sections into specific final states are known. The reliability of theoretical cross sections based on expansion models for such reactions is assessed and some new results are presented for the reactions Be 2+ + H + ← Be + + H +.
