Abstract
The cascade of muonic and pionic helium atoms in targets of arbitrary density is investigated. The calculation does not use any free parameters except for strong-interaction effects. All measured x-ray intensities are reproduced, in particular the $\frac{{K}_{\ensuremath{\beta}}}{{K}_{\ensuremath{\alpha}}}$ intensity ratios in pionic helium.
