Abstract

The response of atmospheric pressure to the Tohoku earthquake on February 11, 2011 (magnitude M ~ 9), is analyzed using the results of instrumental observations made at the Mikhnevo Geophysical Observatory, Institute of Geosphere Dynamics, Russian Academy of Sciences (IDG RAS). It is shown that the earthquake gave rise to atmospheric pressure fluctuations with periods as long as 8.5, 9.4, 10, and 10.4 h. Waves in an isothermal atmosphere with a source at the earthquake epicenter are considered as a possible cause of excitation of these basic variations.
