Abstract
Soil is a vital natural resource that is closely linked to human and ecosystem health. The geochemical environmental atlas of soils of Naples was generated in Italy as a first response to an environmental law that fixed the limits of tolerance for metallic elements and organic compounds in soils and water. The atlas originated from a demand to have available regional- and local-scale geochemical maps showing background levels of soil elements and related organic components that could be used for many purposes, the foremost being for environmental assessment. The atlas is based on information from a soil sampling survey at 982 sites and radioactivity measurements at 400 sites within the city of Naples and surrounding areas in the Neapolitan Province. It is an area of 1171 km2 that includes, to the SE, Vesuvius and Capri and, to the west, the island of Ischia. The soil sampling was part of a larger survey in the Campania region that included stream sediment sampling, the results of which were previously published (De Vivo et al . 2003). The atlas includes 305 maps and more than 160 graphs, figures and tables. The book has an attractive format, a good …
