Abstract

Summary Atherosclerosis-susceptible White Carneau (WC) pigeons, and resistant Show Racers (SR) were fed diets containing 5 % or 25 % soybean protein, and either 1 % or 15 corn oil. In addition, 0.25 % cholesterol was added to all diets. After 6 months on the diets, the WC pigeons receiving 5 % protein diets showed significantly less ( P Unless the diets were supplemented with extra thiamine, WC pigeons on the high fat, high protein diet rapidly developed signs of thiamine deficiency. It was shown that the WC breed is more susceptible to deficiency of this vitamin than are either SR pigeons or the F 1 or F 2 generations resulting from crossing WC and SR.
