Abstract

Abstract Generally referred to as the “founding father” of modern Turkey and the Turkish republic, Mustafa Kemal was one of the most significant statesmen of the first half of the twentieth century. Known to history as Ataturk (“father of the Turks”), he led the Turkish nationalist movement in the wake of the Ottoman Empire's disastrous defeat in World War I, and he commanded Turkish forces in their War of Independence. His military achievements and his crucial role in the establishment of the Turkish state have profoundly influenced the country and indeed the entire region ever since.
