Abstract
Analytical current Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) calculation approach for a 2-level inverter introduced in late 1980s was recently generalized for a single-phase multilevel inverter with an arbitrary number of uniformly distributed voltage levels. Closed-form piecewise analytical solutions were obtained assuming relatively large switching-to-fundamental frequency ratio (asymptotic assumption) and inductance dominated loads. This paper addresses theoretical calculation of current THD for a single-phase cascade H-bridge inverter with carrier based Phase-Shifted PWM (PS-PWM) and non-equal DC sources that is relevant for distributed generation. For more than 3 H-bridges, current THD depends on non-equal DC sources switching sequence on a PWM period (carrier order). Current THD best and worst switching sequences are figured out for an arbitrary H-bridges count.
