Abstract

In a previous paper, the 3-D singularity that prevails at an angular point of a crack front was examined. Two cases can be distinguished according to whether the crack presents a notch or a corner in its plane. Here we concentrate on the case of a notch and examine the asymptotic behavior of the stress intensity factors along the crack front near the angular point. It is shown that these stress intensity factors go to infinity at that point. This means that crack propagation will occur in order to suppress the notch.
