Abstract

This paper describes how asymptotic techniques can be used in the analysis of data from the stress concentration region at the root of a parabolic notch in a thin plate. Three kinds of data are considered: (i) surface strain values from along the notch boundary, (ii) the sum of principal stresses or strains at interior points and (iii) the difference of principal stress or strains at interior points. The merits of the techniques are critically assessed.
