Abstract

Newton's laws of motion are applied to planetary and satellite motion and space vehicle trajectories. The theory given is intended to be of value to teachers doing sixth form work. Kepler's three laws of planetary motion are fully covered as is the two-body problem first stated and solved by Newton. Practical applications of the theory includes the measurement of planetary mass and energy in an elliptical orbit. The rocket dynamics problems of Hohmann transfer orbits, rendezvous problems and interplanetary billiards are also covered.
