Abstract

This article aims to provide knowledge and practical help to health visitors who support parents of children under the age of 5 years to manage wheeze and asthma. Young children with respiratory symptoms are frequent users of unscheduled care and GP consultations, and health visitors are well placed to promote guided self-management at home. Asthma is difficult to diagnose in young children, and parents need to understand how a diagnosis is made over time and the importance of review as part of this process. Working in partnership with parents is the cornerstone of health visiting, and these skills can be used to help parents make sense of clinician decision-making with regard to managing respiratory symptoms and asthma in young children.
